跨文化学习系列西班牙语和英语之间的语言接触区域:Bilingualism in Sports Journalism with Telemundo's Moisés Linares

In this thought-provoking intercultural event, we will explore the various ways in which Spanish and English coexist in the United States. We will unspool questions of language maintenance, national and cultural identity, the role of the U.S. Spanish-language media, as well as issues of language policy.

Professor Eddy Aranaa (World Languages, Spanish and German PPHI Honors Internships) will facilitate an engaging talk about the local manifestations of linguistic contact zones between Spanish and English in our DMV regions.

Our featured guest speaker, local sports journalist, Moisés Linares, will share remarks about his personal and professional journey as a bilingual sports anchor with Telemundo 44/NBC 4.

Attendees will be invited to ask questions at the end of each event language segment.

Said initiative is a “three-year project tracing the emergence of undocumented youth activism over the past twenty years by recording, analyzing, and interpreting political strategies via the collection of oral histories and objects.”

Suggested reading:Documenting Undocumented Political Organizing Movementsnew window. Monarch wings are an important symbol to undocumented organizers. Each year, monarch butterflies take flight across the North American continent to survive. The butterflies’ journey speaks to migration, survival, transformation, and the power of communities. These wings will be exhibited in the National Museum of American History’s upcoming show Girlhood (It's complicated), opening on June 12, 2020.

Our moderator, Prof. Eddy Aranaa (PPHI Honors Internship Program Coordinator and World Languages faculty--Spanish and German) will lead an inspiring interdisciplinary and collaborative event. General information about PPHI Honors Internships and other internship opportunities at the SNMAHH will be provided.
