Health Information Management
Health Information Management (HIM) is the practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care. Health information management professionals work in a variety of different settings and job titles. They often serve in bridge roles, connecting clinical, operational, and administrative functions. These professionals affect the quality of patient information and patient care at every touch point in the healthcare delivery cycle. Having skilled HIM professionals on staff ensures an organization has the right information on hand when and where it is needed while maintaining the highest standards of data integrity, confidentiality, and security.
The associate of applied science degree program provides students with an opportunity to sit for the RHIT and/or CCS or CCA national accreditation exams. Students take lecture and lab courses, as well as clinical courses in affiliated hospital and other health care health information departments in the metropolitan area. Students are able to seek employment during the day, since courses are offered in the evening and online.

The Health Information Management accreditor of Montgomery College is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College's accreditation for the Associate degree in Health Information Management has been reaffirmed through 2027. Students successfully completing the Montgomery College Health Information Management Program are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Medical Coder/Biller/Abstractor Certificate Program and Health Information Management Program students are eligible to take the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exams offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
